Activa Adverse Events
Welcome to the Activia Adverse Events Blog site.
I have created it because I believe the colostomy I received on Feb 10th, 2007 MAY have been caused by my consumption of Activia as directed.
This blog site is open to any or all posts that document any adverse events resulting from people consuming Activia as directed (or not as directed as the case may be, but please indicate as such.)
The "BLOG" is a perfect medium to collect random information and try to make sense out of it with a lot to people collectively searching fr answers!
Please post INFORMATION as accurately as you can. Try to take your temperature and blood pressure if you are entering a blog "real time" with the adverse event.
Please don't rant and rave, no name calling or abusive comments directed to other posts or other people, there's way too much of that going on in every other place in the world, let's try NOT to lose respect for differing opinions.
Thanks for helping searching for answers!

I have had two pots of activia over two days. It has given me a bad stomach ache. I called their helpline and they suggested I give it a break for a couple of days and then try it again. I will not expose myself to the stuff again. I can't believe they are allowed to sell this!
I started taking activia as recommended and for a week I was fine. Then I developed stomach cramps and diarrhea. I stopped the activita for a day - felt better - and had activia the next day. The day after I again had stomach cramps and diarrhea the entire day - couldn't leave the house. I decided to dump the activia.
This sounded like a good product and at first it was...
But...
I would STAY AWAY FROM ACTIVA!
I took it for about 2 months and it was great for a while but about 2 weeks ago I started getting very painful stomachs and then suddenly got VERY constipated. The thing is my 80 year old mother also had the same experience and is now very ill. She has had IBS for a long time and a bit of Diverticulitice but has never developed an infection before. We started taking it at about the same time (she recommended it to me) and we had the same very good then very bad experience... Is there any regulation about testing this kind of product before just putting it on the store shelves and letting the general public test it for you??
My Mother is so nauseous and weak that she is having great trouble eating at all ... she hasn't eaten much in several days because she feels so ill and has to "gear-up" to take her antibiotic pill. She finally did last night and couldn't keep it down ... so she is now miserable in everyday so I am now taking her into urgent care.
I wouldn't have put her situation together with Activa except of the delayed bad reaction that I had at almost the same time. I started researching Activa this AM and I am finding all kinds of Blogs about the adverse reactions that people are having with this product.
That's my two cent's worth.
I hope you are feeling better, Tom.
I think anyone taking Activia should have some antibiotic handy, especially if they have prior bouts of bacterial infection/poisoning. I have had the misfortune of trying small amounts (4 oz) of Activia for a few times in the last two weeks and anytime I have taken it, the result was symptoms of food poisoning (cramps, chills, slight fever, bloody stool).
I am sure there are many who are fortunate enough to resist this Activia Bifidum regularis
without symptoms, but I doubt there are any significant benefit over Lactobacillus acidophilus found in normal yogurt.
I don't know if this site is still maintained by the original user but, I'm glad it is still available to read. I just recently decided to try Activia. About 2 days into consuming one 4oz container a day, i experienced sever stomach cramps. So bad I had to leave work. By day 4 I my sever cramps were now accompanied by diarrhea. It was so horrible. I was placing the blame on everything but the yogurt! By the 4th night I was exhausted from a combination of stomach cramps, diarrhea, chills, and even back pain. Still I continued to take Activia. Finally I returned to work over the weekend and my coworker had told me how over the weekend she had major stomach cramps, and diarrhea. Describing my exact symptoms...saying she never really felt nauseous but had serious bad cramping. Then it finally hit me. We had both started Activia at the same time the week prior!!! I finally found the right culprit after looking up such blogs as this. Needless to say we've both decided to stop. Oh I should also add we are both very regular, we just started Activia because another coworker asked us to try it and it was so good we just continued to use Activia. So, as I read in another blog if you have a normal digestive system don't mess with a good thing.
I to started taking activa,b/c I was very irregular. I do have IBS with conspitation. So anything to help me to be regular right. WRONG! This stuff from day 1 made me feel horrible! I had horrible stomach cramps, chills & nausous. I took it for 3 days and felt worse each day. I couldn't move or do anything, just sat or laid in a ball of pain. I also did not have a BM during that time either. I quit taking it,& it took 3 days before I started feeling like myself again. I'll stick to eating Fiber One stuff.

I also have been eating Activia and even have "upgraded" to their added fiber version with cereal. I have been sick with diarrhea now for 3 weeks. I had stool sample tests done by my gastro doctor and they all came back negative for parasites or bacteria. The doctor and I have figured out it has to be the Activia because that is the only new item I have added to my diet. Stay away from this product! No wonder they goof on it on SNL!
I have been taking Activia for about two months; at first the results were encouraging, I was "going" more frequently. Then I started noticing (Excuse please) mucus in my stool, and now I have such a bowel ache I began to think I had developed IBS. Thank goodness I became suspicious of Activia and found this website! I'm going back to plain yogurt and fiber cereals.
Your blog keeps getting better and better! Your older articles are not as good as newer ones you have a lot more creativity and originality now keep it up!
I ate 6oz of Activia for the first time yesterday at around 12:30pm. By 6:30pm, I had the worst stomach cramps I had ever felt in my entire life. I could not even stand up. I am 3 months pregnant, by the way - So this was a real scare. My abdomen was severely distended and rock hard. After crawling my way to bed.. I had gas, nausea and SEVERE diahrrea for the next 5 HOURS! TMI but it was clear by the sickenly sweet smell of the bowel movement that this was caused by the Activia. This was one of the worst digestive issues I have ever had and I strongly recommend that you do not try Activia.

Hello,
I have read in other links you can over ferment your intestines if you use probiotics giving you flu like symptoms.
I was using Activia for six days. I was VERY bloated, my stomach was hurting and new something was wrong. Anyway by process of elimination I figured out it was the dam yogurt. I stopped eating Activia and basically have been eating crap food, drinking tap water to counter act the "good bacteria". I have been doing this for three days now and it seems to be working! I don't have money to go to the doctor, nor do I have a weak immune system like Tom. I usually eat healthy and loath eating this crap food. The crap food has antibiotics (non organic and such)and the tap water has chlorine in it that fights the bacteria. Hope this helps! Good luck with everyone and make sure you tell people this stuff is not for everyone and consult a Dr. before you consume it.
tried activia about 3 months ago..can't say i had any problems before, but thought it couldn't hurt to eat..after 1 a day for three days, my stomach was distended , hard and bloated and became severely constipated. went off of it immediately, but took 3 days to have a movement. i now get this problem of bloated, distended belly and pain every few weeks, and have had to have a catscan today of my abdomen. hopefully nothing serious, but i attribute this problem that i never had prior to my trying activia.
I have been taking activia for almost a year My initial experience was very positive.taking it daily seemed to settle my digestive tract down and made me very regular.
In the last month i have noticed the "New!"packaging label on the 8 pack stating New Great taste. There was No explanation or"new"recipe ingredients evident but obviously this is a very different product.Ever since i started with the "new!" Activia about the end of July 2010 i have developed very painful gas nausea and constipation.
I have stopped taking it and hope to find answers ,What did they do to the recipe that could have caused this response. It sounds like I'm not alone as many new users are experiencing the same thing.
I plan to go back to regular yogurt cultures and products as it seems there is something wrong with Activia not to mention it cost up to 30% more than regular products.
I'm so glad I found this entry.
I've just started taking packed lunches in to work and thought an Activia would be a healthy way to round off my meal. There was nothing wrong on Monday, the first time, but on Tuesday I got an awful stomach ache straight after lunch which stayed with me through the evening and into the night, as well as diarrhoea. I didn't make the connection, and today had a different lunch but the only constant was Activia, and now have the terrible stomach cramps again.
I thought I was being ridiculous to think that a product that's meant to be of so much help could do so much damage, but this blog post has shown this must be the case. It's terrible and I'm surprised that this is the first I've heard of it. I also can't believe Danone have never addressed what is causing this reaction in some of the people who consume their products.
Bifidus Regularis is the active culture in the shit inducing yogurt; Activia. If you read the literature you will find that Bifidus Regularis is only in Activia. Which sounds pretty impressive until you see the little trademark symbol (™) on it and read further to find out that Bifidus Regularis shit is a trademark held by Dannon
I tried Activia for the first time 6 months ago. Won't touch that stuff ever again!
Anyways, I ended up eating the stuff, and within a few days after eating it, I get pretty bad cramps behind the navel (bellybutton). I dismiss it as food poisoning and continue to eat Activia. I get home (pain free) a few days later and don't really think much of what I experienced. Fast forward a few days, and the Sunday before classes are to start up for the Spring, I end up with pain in the lower right part of my abdomen. This worries me, as I have never had this pain before, so I look up my symptoms on three different medical databases, and all of them say that I have appendicitis. Being young and naive, I dismissed it as my endometriosis acting up.
The next morning, the pain is still there. I ask my friend about it and she tells me to at least go to the school nurse. I go, but too early. I then decide to go to class, because I'm eating like usual, it's just the pain that's bothering me. After my last class of the morning, I am so grateful for lunch, as the pain is severe by now (I'm doubling over and crying). I eat lunch and go to get an apple cider from the coffee shop on campus. As soon as I put the cup to my lips, (btw I love apple cider) I feel like puking. My friend asks me if I had looked it up, and I told him that it told me that I had appendicitis. He insists I go to the ER and we do. A CT and two doses of eight-times-stronger-than-morphine narcotic IV pain meds later, the diagnosis of acute appendicitis is concrete, and within 12 hours of coming to the ER, I am being taken to the OR to have the inflamed appendix removed. I'm extremely lucky, as if I waited, it could have burst (usually 72 hours after the onset of the worse symptoms the appendix bursts, causing sepsis, an infection of the pelvic cavity that can become life-threatening). I spent a day in the hospital, then went home.
I believe that Activia is to blame in this case, as I never had any GI problems until I ate the Activia. I have never had such bad problems before, and I would advise people, if they have abdominal pain after eating Activia, to seek medical attention IMMEDIATELY. I am thinking that the yogurt cultures, along with some other predisposing factors, caused my appendicitis, and even doctors are saying that if the bacteria in your gut are good, that Activia can cause problems with it. With research I have done, the appendix is a safe haven for good bacteria from your gut, so it is very well possible that the bacteria from the yogurt cultures got in there and caused my appendicitis. Overall, I would eat Activia with caution, and wait a few days after the first one or two cups. If you have problems, throw it out and never buy it again and if the problems persist, seek medical attention. It had been over a week after I had quit Activia when I was diagnosed with appendicitis. These things take time to develop, but when they do, they put you on your behind or even worse, the hospital.
When will you post again ? Been looking forward to this !

God bless you Tom for this site. One day I sat & ate 7ozs of Activia with a spoon to finish the tub. I didn’t think of a connection when I experienced 3 days of cramping & waves of pain in my intestine.
I started out with clay gray stools and went into a bloody stool. 2 days later after 3 more movements I
doubled-up with diarrhea. After the diarrhea I felt so much better for hours. Then once I started to feel better I ate some Activia from a fresh tub and the waves of cramps & pain began again. I found I would be fine for an hour or so & then suddenly in cramps & pain again. That is when I realized that it might be the Activia.
I came into the internet & found your blog & I want to thank all the people whom shared their experiences on your, much needed, blog. I am a health person & exercise 3 times a week on bike and running & never would have thought Activia would take me down for 3 days. Now I have retrained from consuming this product I am fine. Why can’t Activia put a warning on it’s label? I shop at the Acme and noticed they only order the 4 oz sizes. I asked them to order the tubs a number of months ago & they said it was policy only to order the individual containers. Therefore, I went to a near-by town to Super Fresh and purchased the tubs. NOW I understand why Acme didn’t sell the tubs. They must have experience information about the adverse affects after eating too much Activia.
Monday I had a container of Activia in the afternoon and felt a bit crampy in the evening, but didn't connect the dots since I'd had Activia in the past with no trouble. The next morning I was at the grocery store and suddenly felt nauseated and faintly crampy. Better in the afternoon and had another container of Activia, still not putting two and two together. That night (Tuesday) I had the worst stomach cramps of my life--so painful I couldn't stand up straight. Nearly went to ER. Up until 2:00 a.m. Better the next day and threw out my remaining Activia, but all week my stomach has felt delicate and I haven't had much appetite. Saturday night now and last Activia was Tuesday afternoon. Hope my system clears soon. I have been drinking lots of water and eating simple foods like rice and applesauce. Have had four medium sized BM's this week, totally normal. But stomach still feels faintly achy and queasy. Since I've had no trouble with Activia in the past, I'm wondering if the trouble could be that I accidentally bought the light kind with aspartame this time around. I also know that sensitivities can develop suddenly in people--alas.
Thank you for posting all of you! I only ate three over two days and my stomach hurts worse than anything I have ever felt before. I will never eat this stuff again!
They need to put a warning about this on the containers! If there would have been a warning with the side effects I would have never tried it!!!!
I like the helpful info you provide on your articles.
I will bookmark your blog and take a look at once more right here regularly.
I'm moderately certain I will be informed a lot of new stuff proper here! Best of luck for the following!

After 5 consecutive days of eating Activia, I started feeling very bloated, crampy and was having sulphur burps. The cramps and noisy belly were enough to wake me up that night. The next day all of those symptoms were worse and by the afternoon the diarrhea started and waves of nausea. I never vomited. I think eating crystalized ginger helped with the nausea. After 36 hours of diarrhea, and not eating, I had cleaned everything out, because the only thing coming out was clear (but it was still coming). On day 2 of diarrhea I started to eat crackers and applesauce and had enough energy to get up and move around. The sulphur burps are gone, but cramps are not. It's now day 3 of the diarrhea and I'm starting to wonder if I should go to the dr. I'm just not sure what they could do for me. I'm not even sure they'd believe it's the yogurt. I'm otherwise very healthy and a very healthy eater. No one else in the fam is sick. Thanks to the internet and this blog - I'm confident it has to be the yogurt. What can I do to feel better?

I have been eating Activia for a few days and have now broken out in skin inflammations on various parts of my body. I am wondering whether Activia is to blame for this. I have stopped eating it now. Has anyone else had skin reactions after eating Activia?
After using Activia for a few days, I started having painful skin irritations. I am wondering whether Activia has caused this. Has anyone else had skin problems after using Activia?

Activia is dangerous. I ate one container and within the hour after eating it, I ended up on the pot. My entire bowels (and then some !) were cleansed! Then water came gushing out?? WTH?!! I then got really cold and began shaking, so I went in the warm bath & told older kids to call their father home from work. It was so scary. I regret NOT going to the hospital & also NOT reporting this info. I immediately threw out the other 3 Activia containers, for fear that one of our younger kids ate it. Has anyone died of this stuff??? NEVER again will I buy any Dannon product. It is dangerous & unnatural for the human body.
I have eaten one small pot of Activia for the past three days. Today I woke up and urgently needed the loo, when I went there was quite a bit of blood in my stool which was very loose. This disturbed me so after phoning in I took a trip to the doc's. They said my blood pressure is normal and that I could have hemmeroids or something, I've got to go to the regular GP (this was an emergency doc on a sunday)to get checked out but I have a feeling its this Activia stuff. I just had another BM which had no blood but was green. Cooky stuff is happening down there, I've got cramps and tender bits in my lower abdomen.
Needless to say I'm not eating anymore Activia.
I am so relieved to find this site, although very sorry to hear your story. I have tried Activia and found that after only 2 days (2 pots in total) I am experiencing uncomfortable wind, diarrhea, cramps and nausea. This also happened when I tried Activia previously. People keep telling me to "keep at it", as it will "get better", but I don't think I want to - nothing I've read on the internet has convincd me that my symptoms will eventually improve if I carry on with the Activia.
I am completely relieved to have found this site! Recently I have purchased Activia because it was on sale and I started eating a 4oz container per day. By the second day I started getting stomach cramps and had awful diarrhea. I thought I was getting sick, but now I know it's Activia to blame. I'm throwing away the package and flushing the rest out of my system with water. I would never recommend this product to anyone! I was regular before and Activia has ruined that!
Mistakenly ate this yogurt, the low fat no sugar added one. I only ate 2 spoonfuls and 30min later got severe stomach pain, nausea, gas, diarrhea. Also non stop digestive tract burning, intestines too, and non stop heartburn. I'm not lactose intolerant and don't have problems with most foods. This one ingredient I think might be the culprit. Acesulfame potassium. Or some combination of that and aspartame and other junk in there. They should be ashamed to pretend this is natural, or good for you to eat. This "food" should be removed from the shelf, if it must be sold, only in the drug isle, with warning labels on it.
About a month ago I bought Activia and consumed one per day for 8 days. During this time I began feeling dizzy and light-headed and what I could best describe as experiencing brain fog and uneasiness. I thought I was coming down with the flu. I really didn't connect these feelings with the yogurt. I also experienced some cramping, but I have eaten other brands of yogurt for years so I didn't attribute these feelings to Activia. Fortunately I ran out of this product and started to feel better, thinking I got over the "flu". A couple weeks passed and my wife purchased 4 more containers of this yogurt and I had one for lunch today. Within a half an hour I began feeling dizzy and disoriented and I suddenly made the connection. I googled "Activia makes me feel dizzy" and came up with lots of stories describing exactly how I felt. I believe this is a product most folks should stay away from! I tossed the remaining containers.
Daughter broke out in horrible welts all over body after two days. 3 benedryl later and the itching is still there. Stay away.
Daughter broke out in painful itchy hives all over....
It is good to know that I am not alone in bad experience because of this product. I think it should have been required to be tested and treated as a drug, not as a food. I believe that it would have failed on the basis of having harmful effects. I think the bacteria in it can be harmful or pathogenic and can persist and reproduce in the body for a long time.

I tried Activia about 12 noon and 2 hours later I had none
stop stomach cramps and diarrhea for the next ten hours
with chills and nausea.. I will never buy this again and as soon as I can leave the toilet I am taking the unopened
containers back to the store, This should be banned from stores. it is toxic.
Activia is awful stuff, it should be taken off the market. After two days of consuming this garbage, My intestinal area is bloated with gas and pain. I just threw this junk out!! Stick with good old yogurt NOT activia, organic and greek is very good for oyu.
This product gives me severe nausea, diarrhea, cramps and gas. . This yogurt belongs in the pharmacy aisle and/or there should be a noticed of possible side effects on the pkg.
I ate 1 and a half containers last night, and within 3 hours I had diarrhea and violent vomiting from 11pm-3am. It's now 6:30am and I'm completely dehydrated and still feel like I need to have diarrhea. I was dry heaving so hard that I gulped water just to something to throw up besides bile. I'm otherwise healthy. I am so completely shocked that this happened and it's the only thinks different I ate last night. I will stay away from this product forever.
I'm currently dealing with a uti that I began to feel the day after I bought and ate activia for the first time. I'm convinced it was activia seeing as im male, single, and very clean.
I bought Activia today because it was the lowest process yogurt in the chiller. Within 3 hours of eating one pot I was doubled over in pain and reaching for the Imodium. Those 'happy tummy' adverts should be taken off air and Activia should be removed from sale. People put this stuff in their little kids' lunchboxes.... it's dangerous.
My mom has eaten Activia for years and has always had stomach/gastro problems - bloating, gas, nausea. But she always felt the Activia was keeping her from getting worse. So I just tried Activia for six days. On the last day, I felt sick, nauseas, dizzy, constipated. Then, the next day I noticed ny gums were suddenly getting inflamed. I decided it was the Activia and I did not eat anymore. Since then, I had mucous covered hard bowel movements. I am still nauseas and now I have a weird disease on my tongue that looks like ringworm. I have never had any of these problems before. Activia is very bad and dangerous.
I see this is a few years old but I have eaten activia for the first time ..I have developed hives crazy itchy little spots on arms legs tops of feet tummy back almost everywhere ...thankfully touch wood not on my face. it is the only item I have introduced which is different.
I thought I was pregnant with morning sickness. ..I drank 5 in a day and a half...Nausea WON'T CEASE.I'm so sick.Even Pepto Bismol is not helping. I can't eat. I'm on birth control and have sex 3x monthly. Is there a remedy?
I've eaten the yogurt in the past with no problems. This time though my skin itches horribly. No rash or hives but it's awful
I can never tell how old these comments are, but as I write this, it is January of 2017, and I'm clutching my stomach like someone on the wrong end of a knife fight. Good lord, this hurts! I ate one of the Peach Activias each day for three days. I had some stomach pain the first day, increasing to shooting pains the second day, but I didn't make the connection until today. Last night, the stomach pains woke me from a sound sleep. I thought they were hunger pangs, so I got up... and ate another yogurt. Tonight, they are burning so bad, I would go to the Emergency Room if I thought they could do something for me.
My plan here is to monitor how many days it takes for these pains to go away (please please go away!), and then come back here and post a follow-up comment once they do, so anyone struggling through this in the future at least has some idea how long it will last. This feeling is like drinking battery acid! Pepto Bismol does nothing.
(P.S. I take a proton pump inhibitor, Omeprazole, to deal with acid reflux, and I wonder if the lack of stomach acid actually allowed the Activia bacteria more time and space to breed, compared to someone else whose stomach acids might dissolve most of the bacteria. If you take a PPI, stay far away from this stuff. If you even see it in the grocery store, point at it and shout, "Devil Yogurt! I condemn thee to Hell!" Your warning will save onlookers untold agonies.)
Oh my god, this hurts. There should be a skull and crossbones or a big yellow biohazard label on those little cups. People who get through a bout of this should get a medal, so they could recognize each other on the street, like veterans of some foreign war. I am going to drink a lot of water and hopefully at least dissipate these critters a little. I'll come back when I hopefully feel better in a few days with an update.

I'm back!
Three days is the answer I have for you. I ate Activia for three days in a row, and it took three days before I didn't feel like my guts were on fire anymore.
When I first realized it was the Activia poisoning me, I drank a lot of water to try and flush the stuff out of me, but I could feel it sliding into my intestines, too. It felt like a war going on inside me. I couldn’t believe anyone was allowed to sell this stuff without a warning of some kind on it. Like maybe a biohazard symbol. It's just unconscionable.
The pain was bad enough that I couldn’t sleep, so I sat up late watching Adam Sandler movies from the ‘90s. Never saw “The Waterboy” before. Kinda funny. Same for “Happy Gilmore” and whatever the other one was. They all kinda blur into each other when you're clutching your guts, trying to fall asleep.
I thought one day of this was all it would take, but my poor intestines burned all the next day, too. My biggest fear was that the Activia bacteria were taking over, that this was going to be the new norm. I really worried about this. You might be, too.
But I could feel the pain was lessening on the third day, and by the fourth day, it was finally gone. So you're gonna be okay, too. It just takes a while.
I'm serious when I say they should have a medal or a ribbon so people who have been through this could recognize each other on the street, and exchange meaningful looks or a hug. I don't think I'll ever forget that night watching Adam Sandler movies, my intestines writhing in agony. Watching Bob Barker punch out Happy Gilmore made me wish someone would do the same to whatever insane corporate yogurt executive unleashed this demonic plague on an unsuspecting public.
You will get better. But you will never forget these nights of pain. Never.
Watch "Billy Madison", and I'll be with you in spirit.

I eat this stuff all the time and I've never had a problem with sickness or cramps nor nothing I've eaten this yogurt since last summer and never once gotten sick or any reaction. I'd recommend this product without worry. It's good tasting and healthy.
